I often come across questions regarding several functions being deprecated and what their replacement is.

Do we need a tag? When Drupal 9 is released there might also be a lot of new questions regarding deprecation, since they're removing all deprecated code from Drupal 8.

Possible candidates:

  • Did you just add the deprecation tag on your own? I'm unsure but thought the process is that a mod adds it and then we start using it. – leymannx Sep 12 at 12:15
  • @leymannx Yes I did. I don't know, if you look at this page it seems like it's not only mods that add tags, drupal.stackexchange.com/help/badges/11/taxonomist. Do you think that I shall remove the tag and let a mod add it if they think we need it? – Jdrupal Sep 12 at 12:21
  • Well, good question. Every time I added a tag on my own it was removed by a mod. That's why I asked the question about adding the layout-builder tag here. To have it added officially. But sounds as if this process is not clear. Maybe we should ask a new question about "How are new tags being added? By mods or by everyone?" – leymannx Sep 12 at 12:56
  • That would be a good idea to get clarification about the tag creation process. I tried to add the tag a while ago and it was removed by a mod, but since I haven't really received a clear answer by a mod, I tried to create the tag myself. So far it's still alive :) But the idea about asking how tags should be created sound like a good idea :) – Jdrupal Sep 12 at 14:00

@leymannx I posted a question, drupal.meta.stackexchange.com/q/3781/72672. Feel free to edit it if you feel something is missing :) – Jdrupal Sep 12 at 14:19

As general guidelines, don't create a tag that replicates a word often used in a question title, and don't create a tag if that tag is uniquely associated to another tag. In the specific case, I don't see the need to make a difference between questions asking about a deprecated function/method/class and questions that ask the code to use in Drupal X and that show the code used in Drupal X-1. – kiamlaluno Sep 13 at 11:45
  • @kiamlaluno Good point! It makes sense, thank you for describing the use of tags in general :) – Jdrupal Sep 13 at 11:54

As you listed, there are already some questions that could benefit from such a tag.

I could also see the tag receiving more use in the future (like with Drupal 9, as you mentioned), and I think it would be helpful for users seeking to upgrade a project, since they could search by the tag.

Rather than pointing people to documentation (harder to find solution) or Drupal Module Upgrader (which requires an install), we should work to categorize questions, so that users can search using tags and find what they are looking for in a few seconds.

I think the tag would be useful and should be added.

  • I may be new to DA, but I'm not new to SE. I've been on the network for more than 4 yrs, with 18K rep on codegolf.SE. Tags work the same way on all sites AFAIK. But indeed, it's up to you. – mbomb007 Aug 20 at 21:29
  • Does DA have a chat room? The question itself doesn't seem to be getting much attention. You could share it there and ask for feedback. – mbomb007 Aug 21 at 16:10
